Building maintenance charges taken seriously by Council

Owners of an empty property in Caterham, Surrey have been fined by the local council for failing to respond to repeated requests that the building be maintained in an appropriate way.

Smashed windows, graffiti and rubbish created an eyesore for residents and people shopping in the town but the building's owners repeatedly failed to tidy up the area.

The fine, although relatively small at £600, is an indication that property owners, especially large, commercial holders, are increasingly required to consider the effect they have on their surroundings, both environmentally and aesthetically.
