Portakabin Solus modular building provides emergency solution - in just two days

Portakabin has provided a quick solution for Yeovil Precision Castings after a severe fire destroyed their office space.

Portakabin supplied them with two of their new Solus buildings in just two working days. The Solus buildings are the most architecturally advanced relocatable buildings available for hire. It is the only building of its kind to be designed without telescopic legs and its design is noted for its attractiveness and practicality.

Sean Wheeler, Project Manager at Yeovil Precision Castings said: "We had specific requirements and criteria that needed to be met as the building had to be delivered extremely quickly, but it had to be of a high enough specification to provide an office for the Managing Director and his visitors. Access to data points was essential as was the overall look of the interior and exterior, all of which had to be extremely professional, high quality and attractive."

Yorkon wins school building contract worth £2.5m

Award winning off-site construction specialist, Yorkon - part of the Portakabin group, has won a £2.5 million contract to build new teaching facilities at a Worcester school, to incorporate 360 extra pupils.

Bewdley High School's two storey modular building will be manufactured off-site in York and is guaranteed to be completed by the start of the new academic year in September.

In order to minimise impact on the environment, the building will heated with wood fuel, possibly the first time this type of fuel has been used in a modular building.

The new self-contained teaching block will provide 12 general classrooms, two science laboratories, a drama and activity studio, and office accommodation. Design features include central heating powered by an environmentally friendly ‘Biomass’ boiler, passive ventilation to provide fresh air throughout, timber cladding from sustainable sources, a highly glazed activity studio flooded with natural light and a striking bespoke roof structure.

Sustainable future for brick waste?

There could be a good use for used scrubbers from flue-pipes - and this could save millions of pounds for the brick making industry...

In his speech at SustainabilityLive!, the UK's biggest environmental trade show Jonathan Powell from Pera Innovation said that the brick making industry as a whole could save £20 million a year by recycling the calcium carbonate filters from its flues, the equivalent of £27,000 per brickworks.

That saving is expected to double over the next five years as fuel prices and landfill gate fees continue to rise.
